In 2017, I interviewed Chinese-born artist Jun Chen about his journey from China to Australia, his unique university experience following the Cultural Revolution, and his sensitive portrait of Ray Hughes for the 2017 Archibald Prize. This painting, of Ray in his wheelchair, partly concealed by curtains, is particularly poignant in the light of Hughes’ death, at the age of 72, on 7 December 2017. He said, “After my Joe Furlonger portrait in the 2006 Archibald, I started with Ray Hughes. He sold well – always. A good dealer is very important for an artist. He showed me every year.”
