Michael Cook’s profile has been on a steep upward trajectory since he moved into making contemporary art in 2010. Invasion was his most ambitious series to date: on a scale akin to making a small film. Yet with all of its complexity, what is compelling about it is its adherence to the tenets visible in all of his work to date – it has beauty and depth in its surfaces, probes at the inequities between black and white, and draws us down into the openness, speculation and curiosity at the heart of its narratives.
