Early in May 2015, the Gold Coast Arts Centre will acknowledge the legacy of philanthropist Mrs Win Schubert, AO. The Gold Coast has been entrusted with the annual administration of the “JOSEPHINE ULRICK AND WIN SCHUBERT PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD” at the Gold Coast City Gallery, since 2002. However both the Brisbane and Gold Coast cultural landscape have been enriched by Mrs Schubert’s activities in recent decades.
Benefactor Mrs Win Schubert is well known to Queenslanders as director of the Gold Coast’s Schubert Galleries between the mid 1980s and 2009. She is also a long-term cultural benefactor in the state. The Queensland Art Gallery collection has also been a recipient of her generosity (including the gift of 13 Fairweather paintings in 2012).
Queensland Art Gallery Chris Saines noted: “Mrs Schubert has been hugely supportive of the Queensland Art Gallery over a long period of time and she has been integral to the way in which our collection has developed in recent years… We have a shared desire to make outstanding works of contemporary art – destination works, you might call them – available to our audiences today and over the long term.”
Congratulations to the Gold Coast Arts Centre for recognition of the generosity in Mrs Schubert’s legacy, and grateful thanks to Mrs Schubert herself for enriching our cultural lives with such commitment and foresight.
